Best Time to Visit

Jinja is a year-round destination thanks to the consistent water levels and flow from Lake Victoria.

Drier Months (Dec–Feb & Jun–Aug): Best for clear skies, sunny weather, and all land-based activities like Quad Biking and Hiking. The river activities remain excellent.

History & Untold Stories

Jinja’s past is deeply intertwined with industrialization, having been Uganda’s main industrial center due to the abundant hydroelectric power provided by the construction of the Owen Falls Dam (now Nalubaale Dam) in 1954. This dam submerged the original Ripon Falls, the waterfalls Speke described when he first ‘discovered’ the Source of the Nile.

A little-known fact is that a portion of the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian independence leader, were scattered at the Source of the Nile according to his will, a quiet memorial marking the spot. The city itself, “Jinja,” is believed to be derived from the Luganda word for “stone,” referring to the large rock outcroppings near the original Ripon Falls.
