These mountains are known as the “Mountains of the Moon.” The park is famous for its snow-capped peaks, including Margherita Peak at 5,109 meters, Africa’s third-highest point. History & Untold Stories
The Rwenzori Mountains were first described by Greek geographer Ptolemy in 150 AD. He called them the “Mountains of the Moon.” The mountains’ glaciers were thought to be a source of the Nile River. In 1888, Henry Stanley was the first European to confirm the existence of the range. He gave them the name “Rwenzori.” The local Bakonzo people have lived here for centuries. They have a deep cultural connection to the mountains. The park was established in 1991. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994.
