History & Untold Stories
Kibale was first a forest reserve, gazetted in 1932. It was used for logging. In 1993, the area became a national park to protect its rich biodiversity. The park is a key research site for tropical biology. Researchers have studied its chimpanzees for many years. The local Bakiga and Batooro communities have a long history with the forest. They now work with the Uganda Wildlife Authority on conservation efforts. The forest connects to Queen Elizabeth National Park. This creates a wildlife corridor for animals like elephants.
